Review

E-commerce is on the rise, calling for more and more ways to sell products and services online. Here are a few e-commerce solutions you can use as well as how they match up against one another.

Volusion

Volusion markets itself as an all in one e-commerce solution especially good for beginners given their no credit card approach, 24 hour support options through cat, and free 2 week trial. The company boasts $14 billion in sales from partners using the system. This is supposed to be 4 times more than other competitors online according to the site.

You can call them at 1-800-646-3517.

Features

  • 24/7 Live Chat-There’s a “chat now” option in the top right corner of the main site. You can choose either “Support” or “sales” here, ad din your name and email, type in a question and then go right into what you need help with. The area also helpfully tells you whether there are chat operators available for sales or not.
  • Free Trial-If you click on the trial link on the main page, you can sign up for a 14 day free trial. It’s a quick sign up with just your name, number, email and password being necessary.
  • Custom Website Options-If you don’t want to use a template and you’d rather have your own design, Volusion can do this for you as well for a large fee. This is about $2000 for the basic “essential” site.
  • Bundle Packages-If you’d rather buy packages separately, you can do this as well with a communication package that adds thank you and feedback form pages, a social media package for blogger and twitter store design, or a “Spotlight” package that has “Deal of the day.” These vary in price from $800 for communications to $1100 for social media.

Shopify

Shopify has over 120,000 store owners according to their page. They focus more on owners who also have brick and mortar locations. You can call them at 1-888-678-9481.

Features

  • 2.15% Credit Card Swipe Rate-This is the lowest the rate can be, so it won’t always be this low.
  • Shopify POS Equipment-You can buy a barcode scanner, an iPad stand, a card reader, a cash drawer, a receipt printer and everything else you need to run a local shop.
  • Sync Brick and Mortar with Online-The service allows you to create an online store with Shopify that syncs with your brick and mortar location so all of the inventory is synced together and you don’t have to spend a lot of time going back and forth between 2 inventory sets.
  • Free 2 Week Trial-Shopify also has the option to try them out for two weeks.
  • Merged Pricing Plans-You can get merged pricing plans for both online and in store. The most basic one for this is $69 per month.

Big Commerce

Big Commerce has over 55,000 stores and these stores have sold over $4 billion according to their site. You can call them at 1-888-699-8911.

Features

  • Migration Offers-For those who have Magento Go or Prostores currently, there’s a migration offer for free and discounted services that goes up to $1200.
  • Easy Free Trial-The free trial on Big Commerce is easy to start up since you can input your store name right on their main page and then hit the free trial link to get going.
  • Free E-book-You can download a free eBook about how to open an online store in a single weekend. This is accessible through a popup on the site, which might put some people off though.
  • 150+ Single Click Apps-This means that you can install third party applications easily.
  • Big Commerce University-This gives you access to training material to learn how to grow your e-commerce business.
  • Facebook Integration-The service also lets you easily setup a shop that integrates with Facebook so you can market to your Facebook followers.

Head to Head

Price

Volusion costs $15 per month for the smallest “Mini” plan. You can get this reduced to $13.50 per month if you go for an annual bill. This includes unlimited storage, no transaction fees and up to 100 products. There are four plans for Volusion with the most expensive going up to $135 per month for unlimited products and unlimited storage.

Shopify costs $29 per month for their basic plan.  This includes a free card reader and 2.9% for online rates as well as 2.7% for in person rates. You get 1 GB of storage for this. You can go all the way up to $179 per month for unlimited file storage as well as extras like gift cards and report builders. This means that Volusion is cheaper for their most basic plan, and for what it costs to get unlimited products since Shopify charges you $79 per month for that and it’s only $75 at Volusion.

The cheapest plan at BigCommerce is around $30 per month and it’s called “Silver.” The most expensive plan is called Platinum and it’s around $200 per month. The Silver plan gets you unlimited products which makes it the cheapest plan of the three companies that do this. You get 3 GB of storage space.

Volusion has the cheapest plans and the most for cheap plans especially at the mid-level.

Features

Volusion has a store builder to get you started quickly, and it also has the 24/7 live chat options as well as 99.9% uptime guarantee for secure hosting.

Shopify makes it harder to find their live chat option, but it is there. You have to look for it under the “Support” page. The chat doesn’t look like it’s around the clock, but the phone support is available 24/7.

The free trial on Big Commerce is a day longer than the other stores at 15 days. Their live chat option is also the hardest to find of the three. The service also has extra easy set up features like a built-in blog, free data migration, and even automation for Google Trusted Store Datafeed if you get the most expensive plan. There’s also unlimited bandwidth for all images and videos.

Overall, Volusion probably has the best support of the three.
